The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Music and Lyrics by Carol Hall Book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson
Directed by Deb Flomberg
April 5 – May 5, 2013

This happy go lucky view of small town vice and statewide political side-stepping recounts the good times and the demise of the Chicken Ranch, one of the better pleasure palaces in all of Texas. Governors, senators, and even victorious college football teams frequent Miss Monas until that puritan nemesis Watchdog focuses his television cameras and his righteous indignation on the institution.

And the Warner Bros./Amblin Entertainment Motion Picture

April 12 – May 12, 2013

The Color Purple is an inspiring family saga that tells the unforgettable story of a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world.

The musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel (and the popular 1985 Steven Spielberg film) spotlights Celie, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 40 years forms the arc of this epic story.

With a joyous score featuring jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues, The Color Purple is a story of hope, a testament to the healing power of love and a celebration of life. With a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, The Color Purple premiered at the Alliance Theatre Company in Atlanta, Georgia and opened on Broadway on November 1, 2005. It was nominated for eleven 2006 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score.

The exhibit Growing Up Healthy addresses healthy life choices through artworks by DAVA youth. Students’ photography, photo collage and stop motion animation coincides with the Month of Photography in Colorado. The exhibit opens to the public with a reception on Friday March 29th from 4 to 8 pm and runs through May 17th, 2013. DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts) is located at 1405 Florence Street, one block south of Colfax in the Aurora Arts District.

DAVA youth present the results of their research into the prevention of substance abuse through this annual exhibition. Middle and high school students concentrate on the use and abuse of drugs, tobacco and alcohol, while elementary school students take on nutrition and exercise. The resulting exhibition is designed to educate the community through the eyes of young people.

This year, middle school students in DAVA’s Job Training Programs chose to present real stories focused on what happens in this community as a result of peer pressure, informed decision making, and awareness of risk factors. They recreated typical situations through acting and stop motion animation. Some students modeled clay characters that play roles within fictional environments. Other students are photographing each other in typical settings such as school hallways and alleys. The results will be presented through series of narrative photographs and animated video projection accompanied by educational text.

Younger students in DAVA’s Open Studio focused on nutrition and exercise through photo and mix media dioramas and photo-collaged sculptures. They learned about healthy choices and the benefits of certain types of foods for different parts of the body. They created life size papier maché sculptures. They then photographed healthy foods to collage onto the bodies according to their properties. Advanced High school students in the Open Studio created individual art projects focusing on choices available in supermarkets and fast food restaurants.

All of DAVA’s exhibits are free and open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday or by appointment. For more information about the exhibits email gallery@davarts.org

Downtown Aurora Visual Arts is a nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to strengthen the community through the arts with youth as its program focus.
